How to Identify Different Moving Scams
3 moving scams that you have never heard of
While certified moving companies like Mover New York provide their customers with reliable moving quotes and excellent service, scam movers have creative ways to charge their customers soaring moving bills. The following methods are employed by rogue movers to take more money from you.
Inaccurate Binding Estimate
Most people select a binding estimate, which is often referred to as a guaranteed moving quote or a flat rate. You pay no more than the quoted amount or less if the estimate was too high. Before moving day, movers will inspect your home and compose an inventory of belongings you intend to move out. If the estimator forgets to include your antique bookcase or any other object, your inventory will be wrong and therefore your binding estimate becomes void. The best way to prevent inaccurate binding estimates is to revise the inventory and make sure that nothing is left out.
Packing Tape
In some cases your moving quote will unjustifiably double because of packing materials. An old trick of rogue movers is to re-wrap your freshly packed boxes with unnecessary layers of packing tape. Packing tape is expensive and can easily inflate your original quote.
Low Ball Bid
You collect three moving quotes, and one of the bids comes in the lowest. What a deal, right? Wrong. The company with the lowest bid is most likely setting you up – and will probably double or triple their original quote when your belongings are in their possession. Beware of unusually low bids - they point to scam movers.
