How to Move Homes with your Fish

Learn how to move fish and other aquarium life to your new home

Moving fish and other aquarium life beyond a short distance is inadvisable because of the high death rate of your stock in doing so. Travel is very stressful on fish and despite your precautions to make the journey as stress free as possible, not many will survive the move. The best alternative is to sell you stock and purchase new fish at your destination. That said many fish lovers still prefer to risk the complications involved than part from their favorite fish stock. If you are planning to move homes with your fish – avail of Mover New York fish moving tips to minimize stress and loss of fish:

Fish and other aquarium life cannot be moved inside their tank. The aquarium and its stock need to be removed separately by you.

Preparing your Aquarium
1. Place your fish in a container big enough to accommodate all your stock.
2. Drain aquarium. Aerobic bacteria in tank will die without a flow of oxygen-laden water. You can preserve your bacteria colony if your move is under the hour - beyond that you may need to restart the bacteria.
3. Dissemble tank. Bag aquarium plants with water to keep their roots wet and prolong their survival beyond a couple of hours.
4. When moving locally, pack your water filter in a sealed container without cleaning the actual device. Clean or discard your filter if your move is of long distance.
5. Move the tank to your destination. Should you arrive at your new address under the hour, fill tank with preserved water from step 2. Otherwise reassemble tank, restart you bacteria and treat water with a week delay before inserting your aquarium life.

Moving Fish
Place your fish in sealed bags, half filled with oxygen when conducting a local move. Larger fish can be placed in sealed buckets.
