FAQ Answered by FMCSA

FMCSA answers FAQ by moving consumers regarding moving insurance, packing & shipping and moving quotes

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations protect the rights of consumers on interstate moves (long distance moving from one State to another). If you are planning a move across USA state borders become familiar with your moving privileges and responsibilities through the frequently asked questions answered by the FMCSA.

What can I do if the mover does not deliver to new destination my belongings?

If the mover did not deliver your belongings despite paying in advance 110% of the non-binding estimate or 100% binding moving estimate, then you have been stung by rogue movers who have violated the Federal regulations for the protection of household good shippers. You may file a complaint with the FMCSA, contact State Attorney General’s office, and/or inform appropriate enforcement authorities in your State.

What can I do if the mover increased the price after agreeing on a moving quote?

If the mover increases the price you are not required to pay more than 100% of the binding estimate or 110% of the non-binding estimate. The mover is required to bill any additional moving charges 30 days after delivery of your goods to your new destination.

What are my liability options when moving?

Be sure you understand the mover's liability for loss or damage of your belongings, and ask for the mover's explanation upon the difference between valuation (designated dollar value of your shipment) coverage and actual moving insurance. Under Federal law interstate movers must offer Full Value Protection or Released Value valuation coverage. Under Full Value Protection, your mover is accountable for the replacement value under $100 of goods damaged or lost while under the mover's custody. Damaged or lost articles will be either repaired, replaced, or rather the moving company will offer cash settlement for the cost of the repair or replacement. With no additional charge Released Value provides minimal protection to your shipment where the mover is liable for no more than 60 cents per pound per article.

What actions taken by the consumer will limit the liability offered by the mover?

-Packing your own belongings is always considered a cost effective alternative to hiring full service movers, yet if your packed articles damage during transit then it may be difficult to establish a claim against the moving company for such D.I.Y packed items

-Selecting released value coverage with articles that are valued at more than 60 cents per pound per article

-Packing & Shipping perishable or hazardous objects without informing your mover
