Recognize the red flags of scam moving to avoid traps lied out to rob you of your money.
House moving is a very stressful time for people. Once you have hired the moving company of your choice, it seems that half of your troubles are already behind you. But what if your hired moving company is a scam company, holding your stuff hostage until you fork out over a bundle of cash?
Linda Bauer Darr, president and chief executive of the American Moving & Storage Associations warns against the hostage-goods scam and the advance-deposit scheme. Darr: "In a hostage-goods situation, somebody has already moved your stuff and quoted you one price. But by the time you get to the destination, they're holding on to goods and they ask you to pay an inflated price: we all know that when someone's charging twice the amount they originally quoted, something's gone afoul". Usually the original quote is very low, and given over the phone. On moving day, the movers will load your belongings to a truck and drive to your new destination. Upon arrival, the movers will ask for an inflated amount, and hand over a bill for four or five times the original estimate. If you don't have the amount on demand, they will drive away with your belongings. A deposit scam is daylight rubbery where movers ask for a high deposit upfront, never to show up.
Know what red flags to watch for when acquiring the services of a moving company:
- Company gives you an estimate of your total moving costs without an on-site inspection of your belongings.
- Movers will accept only cash or demand a large deposit before the actual move.
- The company's website lacks a local address or license information.
- An estimate that is too good to be true. A very low estimate, much lower than any other estimate taken.
- Movers disagree to a written contract.
