How to find a decent locksmith and avoid the Phony ones...
An interesting news item was recently made about a phenomena that's spreading across the United States: People who get stuck outside a car, home or office are opening a phone book to call a local locksmith. Apparently, the local phone books are filled with fake local locksmith contractors. The phone number leads to a to a call center in a faraway town.
The call center sends you a locksmith that actually lives in your area, but is not a certified plumber and definitely does not own a business.
Further more, when the locksmith arrives he charges unreasonable prices and not the price that was mentioned in the phone call. They also use unpleasant ways to demand the money, and sometimes create unnecessary damage just to make the impression of a serious problem.
So whats the best way to reach a reliable and a "real" locksmith, if you have to search it on a computer or a phone book?
- Its better to know a locksmith, a plumber and a mechanic in your area before you need one. Ask people about a recommended locksmith and keep the number in your wallet.
- If you do have to call an unfamiliar locksmith, try to verify that he is indeed a local one. Ask him for his location and see if he hesitates before answering. Even ask for the streets near his street if he just says a street name.
- If they answer the phone saying "Locksmith" and not a specific name of a business, they have a high chance of being a call center.
- Ask the person on the phone for a price estimate and whether there are additional fees.
Let him understand you are not going to pay more and see how he reacts. - When the Locksmith arrives ask him for an identifying card. See if his car has some name written on it. If he looks suspicious ask him to show you his license and insurance before getting to the Job.
We sincerely hope you will not have to face such an unpleasant situations. Make sure you Have your local reliable locksmith.
