Reduction in Burglary Figures

Home security in the form of alarm systems offers burglary prevention

Burglary in Sunderland has been halved over the past four years, new figures from Northumbria Police have revealed.
The 50% reduction equates to almost 1,500 fewer victims and these reductions are continuing, with burglaries dropping by a further 36% since April last year.

The results were reflected in a recent fear of crime survey carried out across the city.

In September 2007, 25% of people thought house burglary was an issue compared to 45% in March 2004.

Around 1,000 homes in the area also received improved home security as part of the Safer Homes Initiative, with 97% of them saying they felt safer as a result.

The reduction in burglary is due to the commitment of local policing teams and their successful partnerships with other agencies.

Chief Superintendent Dave Pryer said: "The drop in burglary is a welcome result for us and clearly demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the safety and security of the communities we serve.

"We will continue to offer crime prevention advice to ensure that homes in the area remain secure against any attempts by opportunist criminals."
