Effects of Neighborhood Security on Homes
Home security is affected by neighborhood security
What most homeowners don't realize about home security is that it extends well beyond their homes. Fact is, the security of their homes is affected by the security of their neighbors'.
Certain studies have shown that homes surrounded by other homes with lax security are more likely to be burgled than homes in a more secure neighborhood. While quite a few homeowners think that it's advantageous to be surrounded by easy targets for trespassers and burglars (because it diverts attention from their own homes), such a situation is more detrimental than beneficial to them.
Homes with neighbors that are vulnerable to break ins and burglaries are also at risk, simply due to the stigma attached to their neighborhood. Burglars tend to generalize the security of certain areas, thinking that they are filled with either easy or challenging targets. Regardless of their security, then, homes that belong in the former group are at greater risk of burglary attempts than those in the latter.
There's simply no fighting the reality that neighborhood security is an extension of home security. And while homeowners may not have as much control over it as they do their homes, they are encouraged to do all they can to support it.
