Home Alarm Systems Contribute to Crime Reduction
Home security alarm systems reduce residential burglaries
Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice conducted a four year research on the effectiveness of home alarm systems on residential forced break-ins. Findings were published in the recent report "The Impact of Home Burglar Alarm Systems on Residential Burglaries", and unveiled a direct correlation between crime reduction and the operation of residential burglar alarms.
This research examined statistics taken from Newark, N.J. police between 2001 and 2005, to find that neighborhoods with high numbers of home alarm system users experienced fewer residential burglaries. By conducting a geographical data analysis, Dr. Seungmug Lee, head of research, was able to cross-check neighborhoods in Newark that suffered the highest numbers of forced-entry incidents with the number of registered home security alarm users in that area: "When I looked at the distribution of the hot spots of both alarm use and residential burglaries, it’s clear … that the neighborhood or street blocks with the higher number of burglaries tended to have less alarms installed, while the neighborhoods or street blocks with the higher number of alarm installations had less instances of residential burglaries."
Not only do home alarm systems reduce residential burglaries, but Lee further found that burglar alarms tend to deter potential intruders from breaking into houses of fellow neighbors who lack an alarm system. Lee asserts: "My study did not observe spatial displacement, but did find spatial diffusion of the benefit… and from that, I conclude that an increase of alarm use may have a positive contribution to the reduction of residential burglaries."
