North Carolina Fights against Shady Locksmiths
North Carolina fights against shady locksmiths to protect the public
NC Attorney General won a court order to stop a network of shady locksmiths from further business operation in North Carolina including, advertising and servicing the locality. Indeed with ALOA code of ethics revision, together with court injunctions, the fight against shady locksmith operation is taking full swing across America to stop the ripping off of customers in the hands of con artists. According to NC Attorney General "It’s frustrating to find yourself locked out of your home or car, and it’s even worse when someone you call for help tries to rip you off…Taking advantage of vulnerable customers is no way to do business, and we’re stepping in to stop it.” Although the ban is currently temporary, the Attorney General is working to establish a permanent ban on shady locksmith operations, accompanied with civil penalties of $5,000 for each illegal act by such organizations.
The Attorney General's investigation unveils a shady locksmith network that operated using names of reputable locksmith companies in the locality, and further advertised under a local address and telephone number. The fact that no member of the shady organization was a licensed locksmith did not stop this network from offering and performing locksmith services. Victims report that over the phone they were quoted one price, only to be charged a higher rate by the phony locksmith who performed the job. One customer claims to contact the shady locksmith after getting locked out of her home. The locksmith arrived and drilled through the lock to open the customer's door, charging her an astronomical $300 including lock replacement. The agent insisted on cash, but eventually agreed to be paid by check made to his name, rather than that of company.
The fight against shady locksmith operations is indeed under way to protect the public from the illegal acts performed by such con artists. Fortunately, scam operations are still a minority amongst the sea of reputable locksmith companies. Yet this minority is still causing great hardships to their victims who are forced to hand over large sums of money for an unprofessional service.
