BBB warns Consumers against D2D Security Alarm System Sales

BBB warns against deceptive door-to-door alarm system salespersons, and encourages consumers to purchase security devices from reputable sources only

The Better Business Bureau is warning against door to door (D2D) selling of security alarm systems. The BBB received more than 2000 complaints against burglar alarm companies sending D2D salespersons to sell security alarm systems. Consumers from North America report they were subject to aggressive selling tactics of D2D salespersons, and consequently felt deceived into buying expensive burglar alarms.

In addition to employing high pressure selling strategies, D2D salespersons made claims not included in the selling contract, just to get consumers to purchase security alarms at over inflated prices. Steve Cox, spokesperson for BBB claims: "Every summer alarm salesmen hit the pavement and every summer BBB receives a rash of complaints from consumers who feel they were ripped off…Even if the salesperson claims it’s a limited offer and they must act now, consumers must always stop and do their research before purchasing any products or services."

The BBB recommends that when purchasing alarm systems, consumers should deal with reputable locksmiths and burglar alarm firms only. Honest and professional locksmiths will not pressure consumers into buying security devices, but will instead let potential buyers examine the specific offer and compare bids from several burglar alarm installers.
